Lanterns, created by Tom King, Damon Lindelof, and Chris Mundy, is a fantastically smart show set between two towering ideas. The first is the reassuring Golden Age familiarity of three centuries of meta-humanity on Earth. The second is the Silver Age concept the Green Lanterns embody: a larger universe which we’re taking our first supervised steps into — an inherently conservative concept that’s also, fundamentally, futile. Guy Gardner, introduced in last year’s Superman, and Hal Jordan, introduced here, are both holding someone else’s fading line. Jordan especially is fighting a desperate battle to find the space between ‘Secure’ and ‘Closed off’ for his planet and his own nature. .
