Let’s start with a classic: 

The noir hero is a knight in blood caked armor.
He’s dirty and he does his best to deny the fact that he’s a hero the whole time.

I’m spending a lot of time around paladins at the moment. I’m about to embark upon T. Kingfisher‘s Saints of Steel books and we’ve just finished two TV shows which follow two very different fighters down very similar routes. Pure of heart, dumb of ass, and hard to kill, Jack Reacher and Maya Lopez embody not only the asthetic Frank Miller talks about in that quote, but just have far the concept has evolved.
