For my birthday we went to see a couple of London stage shows. Instead of last year’s musical pairing, this year the English major asserted itself for the combo of Born With Teeth by Liz Duffy Adams and Robert Hastie’s version of Hamlet at the National Theater. One about the author of the other, both, to butcher one of his best lines, alike in post-modern sensibility.
‘Yeah, that didn’t happen.’
The first line spoken to us in Born With Teeth catapults us out into what I think of Quillspace: the mental landscape between history, fact, audience, and author. Edward Bluemel’s floppy-haired Shakespeare is a puppy chasing his lust for success, while fleeing his lust for his writing partner, Kit Marlowe.
