One of the first things you see in Backrooms is a sign. The normal version reads NO CREDIT NEEDED, its Backrooms version is reversed as we experience our first taste of the alternative reality within which the movie exists. The past, through a 1990s video camera lens and Bay Area pre-smoking ban haze. The present through the geography of personal catastrophe. The future embodied in creator Kane Parsons’ youth and the gold rush to create Weird Internet Thing: The Movie. A gold rush that mirrors, in the original Backrooms videos, ASync‘s decision to take an infinity of yellow office buildings crammed full of horror and use it to make line go up.
Catastrophe. Opportunity. Cataclysmic change. The Latin phrase ‘nunc ante’ meaning ‘now before’ hung curdled and backwards on a sign above an infinite armoire in a world of eternal, internal catastrophe. In the Backrooms, the map is the territory, and you are foreign to them both.
