‘All run from a room almost exactly the size of the one we’re sitting in right now.’
You can feel Tom Hanks lean forward as he says this. You can hear the grin in his voice as the platonic ideal of Dad pulls a fast one on us. I got most of the way through a good-natured ‘Oh FUCK Y-‘ before it hit, the music cresting and 1969 Mission Control blossoming into existence on every surface of the Lightrooms. We weren’t watching history anymore, we were experiencing it. Actors, no longer audience, as Apollo 11 accomplished the seemingly impossible on screens larger than our house.
I cried at least four times during The Moonwalkers. I was usually laughing when I did.
