Mothership Month is here and it’s a perfect time to get dug into the game. I’ve been playing with it for a few months and now is a good time to do something formal with that. Here are the three aims I have for this project:
- Create a sandbox setting that fits with Mothership but has a unique tone.
- Use GM tools I’ve had success with before to get out of my own way.
I’m going to break those down into four groups of five:
- NPCs
- Locations
- Creatures
- Plots
That’s a solid backbone for a setting. I can swap any of those out for others (Contractors, Technology) and a scope that tight means none of the pieces should run long. Also nothing has to go up on a weekend and it’s civilised enough that I can front load some stuff for when we’re away later in the month.
Lastly the tools I’ll be using.
Story Engine is a fantastic system that externalises your creative process and forces you to think outside your usual patterns. I’ve used its prompts for characters, plots and locations and it always works. You can see some of the results of my last project with it here.
When The Walls Fall is one of the best supplements I’ve ever worked with. It’s a series of tables, and a really witty, fun mechanic, that helps you build a catastrophe and what happens after it. I’ve written about it here.
We’ll start there tomorrow, with catastrophe and what comes after. See you then.
