My WorldCon 2019 Schedule

It’s about that time, everybody. As WorldCon prep enters the final couple of corners, here’s where you can find me in Dublin during the week. Come say hi!

Creating Podcasts: Ideas, People, and Themes

Format: Panel

15 Aug 2019, Thursday 16:00 – 16:50, Wicklow Hall-1 (CCD)

Podcasts are living, breathing conversations that at their best entice the participants and the audience in the free flow of entertaining, engaging, and enlightening conversation.  How do you pull this off?  How do you you pick the ideas, people, and themes  that give the right mix of energy and chemistry?  Come get some clues into how the magic is done from some of the best in the business. (And then go see our panellists’ podcasts over the rest of the convention.)

Each panelist, from moderator Deanna Sjolander through Mur Lafferty. Lucy Hounsom, Jennifer Mace and myself are there to both talk podcasts and highlight the live shows we all have. Basically this panel is McBusted, just without the surprising noisecore side project. Unless one of the others has one to announce, in which case, great!

Short fiction of 2018

Format: Panel
16 Aug 2019, Friday 10:00 – 10:50, Wicklow Room-3 (CCD)

What makes a good short story? Can we find any similarities in the themes of recent short stories? Join our panel of editors for a rundown of the short fiction published in 2018, including the Hugo Award finalists for Best Short Story and the James White Award.

I’m in the big chair for this one and am being joined by a veritable murderer’s row of excellent editors including Jonathan Strahan (Tor.com, Locus, Coode Street and freelance), Sheila Williams (Asimov’s) and Neil Clarke (Clarkesworld Magazine) and hopefully some late arriving guests to discuss short fiction in 2018.

Escape Artists Live has, increasingly, become an afterschool special as produced by the Muppets. It’s basically podcast vaudeville, where you’ll get a reading, all the good stuff we do, at least one or two excellent jokes, a chance to put faces to names, ask a few questions, get a sticker, it’s a good time! Come along. JOIN US.

Horror: where are we going?

Format: Panel
17 Aug 2019, Saturday 17:00 – 17:50, Wicklow Room-3 (CCD)

Horror: where are we going?
What is a ‘horror’ story? What makes a horror story work? Must it inspire fear, or can it have different aims and still be successful? Where is the genre headed, and what tales and authors will leave their mark on the genre? What does the contemporary landscape of horror look like to the panellists, and who do they recommend reading right now?

Portrayals of mental health in genre

Format: Panel
18 Aug 2019, Sunday 12:00 – 12:50, Wicklow Hall 2A (Dances) (CCD)

Content warning: may include discussions of suicide and self-harm, mental illness and ableism, eating disorders.

Mental health used well can drive a story, create believable motives for characters and even greater awareness amongst the audience. However, these issues are not always treated sensitively or realistically. This panel will explore examples of mental health issues in genre fiction and consider their implications and accuracy.

I’m moderating here with Penny Jones, Dr Glyn Morgan (The Science Museum, London and Devin Madson. I’m really lokokign forward to this one. It’s a big, important topic and we have to do it justice, especially given events like the recent introduction of Sigma in OverWatch.

Ditch Diggers podcast: live recording
