The best way to solve a problem in a story is to do something else for a while. This is the most irritating thing about the whole process and also the most mercurial. You can pound your head against a story for weeks and make some progress then finally give up and go play Assassins Creed.
Only for the solution that’s eluded you for days to arrive as you leap from Revolutionary France’s rooftops onto some hapless wage slave guard.
So take notes. Lots of notes. Always have a pen, always have a notebook with you. Always. Seriously. That cliché about the notebook by the side of the bed? Do that. Your brain will give you the answers. You just have to write them down.
