After years of Westeros Bad Times, everyone’s favourite grunting marshmallow, Wheels and Elves and Rings and more, fantasy TV is on the way to becoming one note. Take one of the few genre novel series bookstores will still stock (all written by men), apply millions in funding and an animated title sequence, and voila – couch marathon fodder.
Don’t get me wrong, I love (most of) these shows. Seeing genre storytelling reaching audiences of millions does my heart good, and fills me with hope that our modern storytellers will receive similar treatment. But it’s hard to argue that what we’ve seen so far has primarily been of a type.
That type is swept up by Willow as it dashes headlong through the forest in half a cart, pursued by bone-masked killers and arguing with itself if this was the way to go at all.
